Can't log in after editing x-server configuration with Intel driver

I editted the x-server configuration to use the Intel driver for my vidio card (intel GMA3100), but after restart, I can't log in. The screen flashes off and I'm returned to the log-in screen. If I persist, it will give me a command promt, so I tried re-configuring x-server to use VESA drive, as it was originally, but I still can't get past the log-in screen.
Can anyone suggest what I've done wrong, and how to fix it?

It might also help to check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any clues/errors. You can do this with:
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Hi, seems like you hit a problem that plagued me for more than half a year until Centos5.2 came out (see my earlier posts) -- just couldn't get 1280x800. I suggest you
let people know what linux distro you are using by issuing a command
uname -a. My experience with my Fujitsu A6030 notebook that has a GM965 Intel chipset is that Opensuse10.3 and ubuntu do not have this problem, but if you want to stick to one distro that you like,
then you might have to do a bit of homework. I think i810 is deprecated by now, and the one that you are looking probably is i915.
