Can't install programmes in ubuntu

G'day All,

I am new to ubuntu and am having difficulty downloading codecs etc. so i can play music, watch dvds, and read files. My hard drives appear on my desktop but i can't acces them. For instance when i click on a music file it comes up with (Totem could not play 'file:///media/hdb1/My music/Alex llyodd/Alex Lloyd - Amazing.mp3'.)You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins.
I had to change the ivp6 to true to get firefox working so i know i am connected to the net.

I try and download codecs from synapic manager and automatix2 but i constantly get fail errors. I have tried manual with no success. I tried and update thinking that should work and this is what was shown

This is just some of it.

Does somebody know of the problems and what i can do to fix it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

cheers

What happens when you type "ping google.com" in a terminal?

crustydaze 02-19-2007 07:08 AM

ping google

It looks something like this and moving down

sometimes (for some unknown reason) i download things from the synaptic package manager and i dont see them in my menu, so i got automatix2-which seems to work well, it has a lot of various software. also, go to preferences, and i think its either menu or toolbars. a list comes up of the various programs you have but are not shown on the startup menu. dont worry-this is also completly graphical. in the media section, it actually shows six or seven programs Ubuntu installs automatically, just check them to actually be able see them in your program's menu.

Can you post what's in /etc/apt/sources.list That file tells apt where to download packagages from (and Synaptic and I think automatix as well). I'm wondering if maybe there's some error in that's not letting it connect to the right mirrors. For comparison here's what mine looks like.

Your ping time to google is enormous. What is your network setup? Are you behind a hardware firewall, router, or bridge? Using wireless?

crustydaze 02-20-2007 06:54 AM

G'day,

mcmillan :When i type in /etc/apt/sources.list ..this is what i get...

crustydaze@songline:~$ /etc/apt/sources.list
bash: /etc/apt/sources.list: Permission denied
crustydaze@songline:~$ sudo/etc/apt/sources.list
bash: sudo/etc/apt/sources.list: No such file or directory
crustydaze@songline:~$ sudo /etc/apt/sources.list
Password:
sudo: /etc/apt/sources.list: command not found
crustydaze@songline:~$ ##/etc/apt/sources.list
crustydaze@songline:~$

And to answer you RAdams i am not to sure what you mean but i'm on the windows network when i select the "network server" in "places" or i'm "wired connection Address: DHCP" when i look at network settings and i am running through a DSL - 502T ADSL Router.... I hope that gives you some information to help me...

cheers

crustydaze 02-20-2007 07:30 AM
