Can't install new Kernel

Maybe its easy but Im a newbie on this... I compiled and installed a 2.4.23 kernel on Mandrake 9.2, using a manual... I tried every method that I could but I still can't boot from it... When I try to boot my new Kernel the screen goes black and the keyboard lights begin to flash. I just gave up because I tried everything that the manual said but nothing happened... Then I downloaded a 2.4.22-10-mdk Rpm and tried to install it but nothing happened, my computer still boots from the old kernel. Do I have to do something else or am I doing something wrong? I will apreciate any help.

Umm, even if you compiled the kernel properly, you should add the kernel to the "lilo.conf" file.

image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.23
root = /dev/hda1
label = 2.4.23

That's what it is for mine. Depending on how you build and install your kernel (i.e. rpm or make menuconfig) the lilo.config file might be configured for you. If you install it manually or with "make install" you will still have to run the actual "lilo" command. Lilo is located in /sbin/. After you run lilo, you should be able to reboot and see the additional kernel in your Lilo menu.

the screen goes black and the keyboard lights begin to flash
That suggests that you compiled your kernel for
something that your machine doesn't have/support.

Look at your configuration again, and make sure
you only set stuff you're certain you have/need.

cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.23
make mrproper
make clean
cp /boot/config .config
make oldconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cat arch/i386/boot/bzImage >/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.23
cp .config /boot/config-2.4.23
cp /boot/
cd /boot
mkinitrd initrd-2.4.23.img 2.4.23 #May not be necessary

Edit /etc/lilo.conf and add this:

initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.23.img #May not be necessary
append=" your standard append"
root="your root partition"

Save lilo.conf
