Can't install Mplayer!
 

I have absolutely had it with Linux!

I have spent over an hour trying to get divx4linux and libdivx4linux installed so I can get the RPM I downloaded for Mplayer to be satisfied for an install.

I don't understand this about Linux (if someone can explain it to me I would be very happy) : when I try to install divx4linux I can't because I need libdivx4linux0. When I try to install libdivx4linux0.rpm it tells me that I need l need divx4linux! WTF! I mean I am so frustruated right now that I think I have had it with linux. User friendly my ass. I spend countless hours looking through forums just to find some help to install a simple program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

not user freindly put user way powerfull
but your problem is not with "Linux" but rather with an ancient redhat package manager of questionable value called
"rpm"

you are doing this like you are using redhat 6

im not famliar with mandrake but from the sounds of that link urmpi is like YUM. What YUM does is you tell it to install a certain package and it will search your computer to see what other packages you need for the one you tell it to install so you don't have to go run around and try to collect them all and install them all yourself.

on a side note I have never really heard of linux being called user friendly, i only heard it was very powerful. I know it is moving towards more user frindliness. But that is what attracted to me was it lacks of user friendliness, i wanted an OS that would force me to learn and not something like Windows that holds your hand and walks you through computing. well anyways that was my rant for the day. :)

Mandrake is very user-friendly, you simly need to learn to properly use it. Specifically, its package management system, urpmi. There is an excellent tutorial on this here.

I wish I would have seen this earlier especially with regards to the circular dependecies. I will learn to use the URPMI commands.

Is there any books that you would recommend to help me learn Mandrake better. I am not a newb with OS's just Linux.

One more question. I figured out URPMI and I installed mplayer RPM but when I go to install the GUI or skins I get this error:

"URPMI database locked"

What I am I doing wrong?

switch to debian and use apt

and as far as skins for MPlayer, download them from the mplayer site, unzip them, and move the folder to either .mplayer/Skin (in your home directory) or /usr/share/mplayer/Skin (or /usr/local if mplayer is installed to that prefix).

I figured it out:

I did this:

killall urpmi urpmi.update urpme rpm urpmi.addmedia
rm -f /var/lib/urpmi/.LOCK /var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK

Mplayer works perfect now and the GUI is fully functional.

There were times that I had a similar circular dependency problem. One thing to try is to use 'urpmi' with both packages as arguments, using the full file names.

I am not sure if the problem is caused by mistakes by person prepairing the packages, or if there is a dependency design error in the program itself.
