Can't get Openoffice.org Base out of read-only mode

I'm running a Dbase file which is inside of a crypt file, and it only opens in read-only mode. I've tried to get edit mode to work, and the icon is greyed out (openoffice.org help isn't solving this for me). I'm running the 2.0 openoffice.org Base version, under Suse v.10. I'm beginning to suspect that the crypt file location of the dbase is the problem (openoffice.org writer and inkscape work fine with the crypt file, though). My file permissions for the dbase .dbf file are correct. Irksome thing.
