Can't get my onboard sis900 to work at all

I am a complete an utter newbie to Linux, but I've told my boss how great it would be to install Linux on our PCs and save in licensing costs from Microsoft. I've downloaded a few distros now, such as best linux, peanut linux & have even bought the book Red Hat for Dummies which came with Red Hat 6.1. Problem is I can't get any to work with my Network card (an onboard sis900 NIC) I know the adapter works cause i've been running Win98 on the PC previously, and I can't buy a new NIC as I've got about forty identical PCs I've got to role Linux out to. I realise I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. I come from a Microsoft background and am used to plug & pray doing the leg work, please help!

Steve.
very much a

A quick Google search indicates that you should be using the sis900.o module. This article on SuSE's support site documents one possible problem, and the fix. As the article suggests, check your /etc/modules.conf file (it may be /etc/conf.modules) to see which module is associated with the network adapter.

Depending on the distro and version you are using, support for the sis900 chipset is probably built into the kernel, but if you're using an older version of Linux, you may have to obtain and install the corect driver as a loadable module.
