Can't get macromedia flash player to install

I can't seem to get macromedia to install properly. I am using ubuntu dapper drake and i'm very new so please be carefull and slow with me...

I've tried both following the instructions given by macromedia and instructions from //ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper#How_to_install_Flash_Player_.28Macromedia_Flash.29_Plug-in_for_Mozilla_Firefox[/url]

I assume it hasn't installed properly because when i go to movie playing sites like metacafe it tells me i don't have the latest version of flash player installed.

can anyone help please... then i can move on to my next problem!

Alot of flash is being written in version 8..... they haven't released v.8 for Linux, and aren't likely to, the dev team is working on v.9 at the moment.

There are FOSS like gnash that are trying to rival it but it's still a bit behind i believe

This is what happens with closed proprietry software, you either have to reverse engineer or wait for creators to release binaries for your OS, if it was open we'd all be good, whatever OS we used.

(assuming you have configured it right, that's probably your prob)

I too get this on some sites even though I have the latest player installed. I can't check this with metacafe as it doesn't seem to be loading atm.

To install manually go here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downl...sion=Netscape4

There are some instructions. To check which version is installed type
Code:
about:plugins
in firefox address bar and you should see which version you have.
