Can't get camera recognized with Guvcview

I tried to get Cheese to work properly (the video and audio were very out of sync) but couldn't. So I tried Guvcview. (I'm on Xubuntu 15.10. On a 64 bit computer.) When I first tried to open it I got a little window saying: Guvcview error: Could not start a video stream in the device.

When I clicked on "Ok" it opened the Guvcview config window and I clicked on 'capture video' and there was nothing. (But then I found later the files were saved and there was audio, but only audio.)

I switched to a different usb port. This time I got: Guvcview errror: no video device found.

And this time when I clicked on ok I did not the the config window (or anything at all).

I just need decent video with properly synced audio. So, #1) Any ideas on how to get the camera recognized in Guvcview? #2)I'm open to other ideas for getting the decent video with the properly synced audio.

Thanks.

It's likely not a guvc device.

What is the make/model of the camera?

Thanks Frank. Btw I did this:

The camera is a Nikon Coolpix L15

Is that a webcam or a digital camera? Guvcview and Cheese are commonly for webcams, that is, live motion picture cameras attached to computers. Stand-alone digital cameras are a whole nother thing.

I admit I'm puzzled. Could you provide more detail as to what precisely you are attempting?

My bad, Frank. (brain cramp) It's a webcam. Logitech 1.3 Megapixel (RightLight Technology/RightSound Technology). (I was taking pics with the Nikon today, as it was 70 here.) (I'll attach my best pic of the day.)

My heavens, how could you! I haven't made a mistake since, at least, five (or six or seven or eight or nine or--what time is it, anyway?) p. m.

I don't use webcams often, but I found a thread on stackexchange that might help you get started on shooting this trouble: http://video.stackexchange.com/quest...ring-recording

I used this search string: "webcam not sync cheese"

Beyond that, I'm afraid I won't be able to help much because I just don't have much experience with webcams.

Maybe give skype a try:-

Here are a handful of other webcam apps for Linux:

If that doesn't help take a look at this Tutorial:

Hope that helps.

Thanks Frank. I pretty much gave on cheese. Just seeing if I can get the video for this guvcview.

Thanks Ztcoracat. It seems like all of these programs are close to being good, but none of them are good. I downloaded one of the apps in one of those links: Kamoso. It takes nice photos as .jpgs, which is nice but I really want the video and as far as I can tell my version of Kamoso doesn't take them. (see screenshot of the tutorial) (It says there's a red button but there is no such button. And none of the other buttons seem to take video either.)

And thanks but the tutorial is way too much for me and my meager computer knowledge.

There's got to be something though, right? I just want simple video with synced audio. Thanks.

Your Welcome-

I'll ask around and see what other members are using when it comes to webcams and videos.

Thanks, Ztcoracat, but I'm able to use a friend's laptop with a built-in webcam and it works really well. Syncs the audio and video perfectly.
