can't find data

I have two hard drives, with mandrake 9.1 on the master and xp on the slave. xp crashed though, and i am trying to re-install win98. i wanted to switch the drives though, put linux on the slave (which is much bigger). what i did was copy the folders from windows that i wanted to keep first, and save them on my master drive, then install a fresh copy of linux on the slave. this all worked fine, except i didn't realize i wouldn't be able to boot the old version of linux anymore. taht wouldn't have been a problem, except that on folder that i need was saved on the desktop in my gnome environment, and now i can't find it.

sorry if that's a bit confusing, but does anyone know:

1) how to find something stored on the desktop of a drive you can't boot?

2) how to boot multiple installations of the same linux version on the same computer?

if you have any advice for me that would be wonderful. all i want is to save these folders and have linux on one drive and windows on the other.

but when i re-start it only offers me "linux", not "old linux"
what am i doing wrong?
