Can't enter text in certain Java text fields

I'm having a problem when trying to enter text on Java applets in webpages (The problem occurs in both Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7). Nothing happens when I try to enter text in certain fields. What do I need to do to rectify this and make my Java client recognize when commands are being sent to it from my keyboard? Certain types of text fields seem to work like the message entry line on Undernet's java irc client, but the nick change box doesn't work, nor does this: http://www.terrafly.com/ or GeoCities' java page builder. Any ideas? Is this a cross platform Java bug or a problem with the way I installed Java and the browser plugins?

What JRE (Java Runtime Environment) are you using?

I'm using the client supplied by Sun. The specific version is listed as "Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_07, Default Virtual Machine Version 1.4.2_07-b05, Java(TM) Plug-In 1.4.2_07

If you have Konqueror or Opera installed, try running the applets in those browsers and see if your problem still exists.

Both Firefox and Mozilla use the Gecko rendering engine so if it's a problem with Gecko it'll show up in both.

I just tried terrafly.com in Konqueror and it has the same problem.
