Can't download Mepis 3.3 into my laptop

Hello everyone, and I thank you to all of you who welcome me to the linux community. Now, getting to the point I haven't been able to download Mepis 3.3 into my system. Every time I try to open the page my computer says that an error has occur and has to shut down. I have a sony vaio model PCG-V505EX. I will appreciate your help. Thank you jovirlo.

What I'm trying to do is to repartition my hard drive to make the space available even without having to reinstalled everything in the drive again.

Have you tried this mirror http://ftp.wustl.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/3.3/?

Do you really need Mepis 3.3? Is a quite old version, why not trying 3.4.3 or 6.0?

What I'm trying to do is to set my computer to download the latest version of it. But, I want to repartition my drive to get more space to linux, since msw took most of the space in the original partition in the drive. I found out that the version 3.3 is the easiest to do this.

Have you considered vmserver instead? It's free (as in beer only, not speech) & requires no repartitioning. It also may save you hardware problems later. In essence it makes "Winders" into a set of working, albeit bloated, drivers. This is especially true of laptops.

I have done between 50 & 100 dual-boot installs for other people in the last 2 years, & my 1st choice today is vmserver, not dual-booting. Of course on some older machines there may not be enough RAM or even CPU MHz to give a good Linux experience & in that case re-partitioning & dual-booting is the fall-back.

http://www.google.com/search?q=sony+...del+PCG-V505EX seems to indicate you have 512 MB, which many people find is enough to run 1 VM at a time.

Before you get too committed to dual-booting, I suggest you check if your model is compatible w/ MEPIS 6; you may solve 1 set of problems -- dual-booting, only to find you have driver issues.

Please ask all Q's publicly -- in the fora

From an e-mail I received:

This is a message from jovirlo at LinuxQuestions.org ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/index.php ). The LinuxQuestions.org owners cannot accept any responsibility for the contents of the email.

To email jovirlo, you can use this online form:

OR, by email:
mailto:jovirlo@yahoo.com

This is the message:

Thank you for your reply. Could you please tell me how can I find out if my computer is compatible with MEPIS 6. Once again thank you.
Because you are new, I will not report you to the mods., & I will try not to flame you here. But, it is inappropriate &, I believe against LQ rules, to ask for help privately or to ask for help privately: i.e. don't ask Q's by e-mail & don't ask for answers to be sent by e-mail. While one purpose of LQ is to get you the answers you need, another is to create an archive of Q's & A's that others can consult; therefore your Q & my A need to be public.

What have you done to help yourself answer this new Q (about MEPIS 6)?

e-mail/mepis 6

Like how you mention I'm new to linuxquestions.org and I did not know that was such a big deal to send an e-mail asking a question. Anyway I'm sorry I did not meant to offend you. The reason I'm asking the question of how can I know if my computer is compatible with Mepis 6 is because I have been trying to download it and it has been impossible. I have been looking in the Linuxquestions forums to find any informantion but I haven't found anything. Also, I went into google to find more info about the topic; but unfortunately I haven't have any luck. Any sugggestions?

What does it mean that Mepis 6 "is impossible to download"? You cannot download it or cannot run it on your computer?

For compatibility issues give a look to Linux HCL

I assume you already tried to download from all the mirrors listed in http://www.mepis.org/node/1462.

If so, you have some connection problem or limitation posed by your provider. I can donwload from all them, of course somme mirrors are slower other are faster.

What do you mean?

The mirrors appear to be working fine. Perhaps there's something wrong with your browser or connection? Maybe try an FTP client (for the FTP mirrors, obviously)?

At the risk of being accused of spamming this forum (I've already linked this in LQ's Mepis forum)
http://www.tomlinux.ca/

Follow the advice on ftp download contained in the link.

Your insistance on using 3.3 is a little baffling. Go with 6.0, it's the most stable version at this moment.

Note to mods. Tom will likely link to LQ if requested. His site is accepts no ad revenue at this time.

Good choice.

I am "stuck" w/ 3.3.2 until I can get my VM box built & running , then I will give 6 a whirl. What I won't use is 3.4 because somehow they removed the the 3 vertical bar sys load graph applet & I couldn't find it again. AFAIK it's back in 6.

BTW, no one seems to neutral about the fish (KAquarium) -- it's love 'em or hate 'em. I'm one of the later, 2nd thing I do is "poison" (remove) them.

If you really still want 3.3, I think 1 or 2 of the mirrors might still have it available.

Just for completeness of information, keep in mind that a new release of Mepis (Mepis32) is on the way, I think it's matter of days...so you can also consider to go for that
