Can't delete Knoppix Desktop icons for optical drive
Hi,
I am running Knoppix 5.1.1 and have one optical drive. On my desktop there are four icons labeled "DVD (hdb)", "DVD (dvd)", "CD-ROM (cdrom)", and "CD-ROM (cdrom1)". I cannot figure out how to delete any of these four icons and they do not appear under /home/bmccann/Desktop. If I try to drag to the trash I get the message "Feature only available with HAL". Any ideas how I can get rid of them? (I added the line "exit 0" at the very beginning of /usr/bin/mkdesktopicons, so they shouldn't come back if I can figure out how to delete them).
Thanks,
Ben

See if they are in your fstab file and remove them from there, you may be able to remove the ones on your desktop after that.

I can't get rid of the from the fstab file without Knoppix putting those lines back in. I'm not sure that's what I really want to do anyway. My problem isn't with them being automounted, but rather with the icons that are placed on the desktop.
Thanks,
Ben

I'm not very familiar with Knoppix (my last experience with it goes back a few years). If it uses Gnome, then you may be able to get rid of the icons by finding Configuration Editor (on most distros that's under Applications >System Tools), and disabling "show desktop icons" (or something like that) under its Apps/nautilus section. I'm sure that there is a KDE equivalent but I'm too much of a Gnome guy to be able to tell you just where.

If you are using KDE then open your Control Centre (kcontrol) then go to Desktop--> Behaviour--> Device Icons and remove the checkmark in Show device icons.
