Sorry for the long message but I thought that the more information the better. As the subject suggest's I have problems with Win98 machines connecting - they try to get to a share \\debian\ipc$ - have no idea what this is. All I'd like to happen is for there to be a guest login
which I presume is the 'nobody' account with write and read access to all win98 boxes to the public folder(btw can I set a quota on folder size?). I'd also like that other home directories are not displayed but only displayed if logged in as the user - this is from XP/win2000 boxes as I believe win98 clients don't have this capability. Any other suggestions would be appreciated given my configuration above.

I am not sure, but i think those ipc$ are the computer names and they needed to be known to the server, you could "install" them with the useradd command and within the user name starting with an $. I am absolutely not sure, but this could work. It is also described anywhere in the samba docu. Hope this was the solution.
