Hay, I'm having the same problem. I had the problem on my old computer but after reinstalling as an exclusive partition it stopped. I think that might just be coincidence but I'm not sure. On my new computer I've tried virtual partitioning, physical partitioning, and just plain installing it. I've installed it about 5 times since I have no better ideas and it just isn't working for me. I thought that it might be a Compiz compatibility issue but that is not the case since this time I just installed Ubuntu 9.04, it asked to install Nvidia drivers and updates. I installed both and restarted. The gui will not load. It prompts for user and password then acts as a terminal. Here are some notable bits of information I noticed.
"startx = fatal server error:
no screens found
ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
giving up
xinit: No such file of directory (errno 2): enable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error."
I'm new to linux so if you want to ask me some questions you might end up helping, give me a skype, I'm pretty much always on.
