Can't connect to esd server

I'm trying to get the 'sound scope' plugin for GKrellm running, but I keep getting the above error. I've got Esound 0.240 and GKrellm 2.3.1 installed from a Mandriva 2009 rpm. XMMS and Realplayer work just fine I just can't seem to get the esd daemon running. My /etc/esd.conf files is:

auto_spawn=0
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 1
spawn_wait_ms=300

Anything I should try?

there is a reason I believe people are not answering your question. mandrivia comes with gnome or kde 2009. so we all know esd was made for kde at least it always works so I guess yours is a gnome environment ->system -preferences sound the click the tab for sound events and enable them. if this does not work after several trys do like I did in the gnome environment reinstall esd . this is also a gnome pulse server glitch that has been going on for at least 5 years. if this does not work let me know been fighting this problem for a while on all gnome desk tops.

Thanks for the reply, actually I'm running KDE 4.1.3. I've gotten it working by installing xine and the mp3 backend. My problem was with the GKrellm Sound Scope plugin reporting the esd error. After installing xine and reconfiguring the sound setup as you suggested above it's been working with no problems.
