Can't compile stuff under KDE 3.1, mandrake 9.1

First of all, hello I'm in the process of learning and maybe switching to linux so bear with me if I don't know alot of stuff.

Anyways, the problem I'm having is that when i try to configure extracted files,...so far i've only tried themes/additions to KDE, I get an error about it not finding X includes. I've installed everything uner packages that was seemingly relevant and some stuff a friend of mine told me to try...to no avail.

So what am I missing? I'm pretty sure its some sort of file that has to do with KDE and compiling new applications.

Hopefully this isn't too complicated to resolve, hehe

post whatever error message you got after running ./configure, it's a little vague now.
But check if you've got the xlibs-dev package installed.
Usually you can check it by doing rpm -q xlibs-dev.
If it's not installed, install it; it's somewhere on your Mandy cd's

Checked on 1st and 2nd CDs...doesnt seem to be there...though I dont know how to get the package installer program to display details like it does CD1 with CD2, so i might have missed it. Is it on CD3 perhaps?

Seems semi-important so i doubt it'd be hidden away on CD3 somewhere.

There's a lot of usefull stuff on cd3. I couldn't do without it. Well no I probably could but it's a lot easier to get things going if you can just put the cd in, otherwise you have to Google and download all the time. Google on the error messages you get. Also, read all the documentation, install and "read me" files that come with whatever you're trying to install. Good luck.

Most of those libraries are actually on mdk's cds, go to 'install sofware' in mandrake control center and do a search for those you need, like:
'lib', 'include', 'x', 'develop'
and install the results

Cheers

I think I got stuff to compile at least...needed some lib file that I randomly saw the description of on CD2 and realized that was it.

Now that I think i got that...anyone know what "cannot find -lpng" would refer to?
