can't chroot

I went to fix something in my system today., so I used my old gentoo live cd to boot my system. When I tried to chroot my root partition, I got an error. It told me my kernel was to old. I then used my knoppix cd with the 2.6 kernel to boot and chroot my system this caused no problems, it worked.

My therory on this was, I recently updated my system to 2.6 kernel headers. Would that be the reason why i could not chroot with my live cd that uses a 2.4 series kernel?

Well, I just tried it with the system rescue cd using a 2.4.27-fd36 kernel on the cd. I didn't get anywhere at all as it refused to run chroot or /bin/chroot. Yet chroot shows up in whereis chroot.
Oh well, if it works in knoppix with my 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 kernel, I guess my system is working.
