Can't change xorg resolution with radeon

I've got a fresh install of Gentoo linux on my machine, with version 6.8.0 of the xorg server, and an ATI Radeon 7200. I had no difficulty using this card under my old Debian install with a somewhat older X server, but now, every time I run X, it sets up my monitor at it's maximum resolution: 1920x1440@60Hz. The screen size I actually specifed in my xorg.conf runs as a small viewport inside this. Neither the X server log nor the console report a single error, and only one seemingly meaninful warning:

(WW) RADEON(0): No Connector Info Table Found!

Any ideas on how to get the server to run as a sane resolution?

I ditched XOrg, and got the latest XFree86 (v4.3.0.1). I still don't know what was wrong before, but now it works fine, so I'm happy.
