Can't change CD Writer Device in xcdroast
Hi, I've just installed xcdroast and am going through the setup. xcdroast found my two devices,
Device-ID Vendor Model Rev [0,0,0] ATAPI CD-RW52XMAX 1.0 [ATAPI:0,0,0] TEAC CD-W54E 7.1F In the CD Settings section of xcdroast's setup, the CD Writer Device is set to the TEAC device. I would like to make it the other device but it won't let me. I tried clicking the dropdown arrows but nothing happens. I can set the CD-RW52XMAX as the read device, but that's it. If anyone can suggest a solution to be able to change this, that would be great. P.S. does anyone know what those icons under "Type" in Device Scan mean? There is a plain silver one and a gold one with a laser... Thank you! |
Wild guess: plain silver is reader, gold with laser is writer?
|
;) sounds good to me. I just need to change the device for the writer.
|
anyone?
|
did you launch XCDRoast as root? there are some config. options only available to root.
in console: $ su <password> # xcdroast |
I have tried as root. However, it still won't let me change the default writing device.
|
Why do you want to change the writing device?
Linux is pretty good at picking the rite device. |
Well, the device it chose only writes at a max of 4x. The device that i want to use but that is set as the default read device is 52x. Using my old burner would just be wasting the new 52x burner that i just bought a few months ago. :)

recording device. you mention,,,, Quote:
I've got the two different icons that you speak of. GOLD with the laser is my writer. And silver is the reader (as in it can only read thats it) Since you have a gold and silver i would think that the software is only seeing the TEAC as the *only* writer. When it says 'TYPE' (gold / silver) I think its saying thats the type of drive. Not what that drive is assigned to do, Read or write. You were probably thinking the same thing since you asked about it. From the XCDroast FAQ "/4. My writer is not on the supported list! Is is supported anyway or when it will be supported? / Please look at the cdrecord-homepage <http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/.../cdrecord.html> for a current list of supported writers. But even when your writer is not on the list, chances are very high that it is supported. Newer writers (less than one year) usually are SCSI3/MMC conform, which means that they run anyway, even when their name is not on that list. All ATAPI-Writers are supported. Parallel-Writers are also all supported, when the parallel-port driver in the Linux kernel works. (See your Kernel-documentation)" You didn't mention the manufacture of your 52x drive but check that link. On that page is a link to unsupported and supported drives, check it. |
Perhaps you should try using scsi emulation with the burner that you're wanting to use. If you're using a 2.6 series kernel, it shouldn't be necessary but I use kernel 2.6.4 and scsi emulation still comes in handy greatly due to the slowness when cdrecord tries reading from an empty drive and such.

I am 99% sure that my CD-RW is a Lite On drive. I did not see this in the list you gave me in either the supported or unsupported sections. Here is some information about the drive... Quote:

Well, upgrading didn't solve the problem.
|
Note:
When i rescan devices, I find the non-emulated device for that drive... [ATAPI:1,0,0] ATAPI CD-RW52XMAX 1.0 In the information section for this drive there are a few warnings, they are: Warning: Using ATA Packet interface. Warning: The related libscg interface code is in pre alpha. Warning: There may be fatal problems. It also sees it as "Device type: Removable CD-ROM" I don't know if that helps, but I thought it was worth including. |
