Can't burn mp3 files with K3b

Never had problems until Mint 19 Tara was installed. Now it gives me following error message when I tried to burn some mp3 onto CD:

Have you tried any other burning software?

No. Have used K3b since Mint17.
What alternative do you recommend?
Thanks for reply ☺️

I use Brasero on Mint 19.

Trying the alternative is only to get some idea if the problem is at the level of the software application or the hardware/system.

Also, given that the error mentions permissions, have you tried running K3b as root?

As I was suspecting, the "cdrecord has no permission to open the device" error message likely means that the /usr/bin/wodim executable has incorrect file permissions applied to it. The solution in that case would therefore be to change the permissions on that file to the correct permissions.

Here's what they are for my system:

Code:
[james@jamespc ~]$ ls -la /usr/bin/wodim
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 311744 Nov 20 2015 /usr/bin/wodim
You may also find this helpful.

A lot of KDE apps that don't need root permissions will detect that and quit.

I encountered this with K3B on Slackware a while ago. (Since then, I've reinstalled for other reasons.)

It's a permissions problem of some sort, but I never bothered to track it down, as I do very little burning these days (I just ran K3B as root and it worked). As an aside, I just did a crossword puzzle in which "DVD" was the answer to a clue that read something like "fading data storage method."

It's a shot in the dark, but try putting user in the wheel group and let us know what happens. The wheel group seems to have mystical powers.

I have an image I need to burn. When I get around to it, I'll see whether I run into a similar problem and report back, but it will likely be a couple of days.

Hi frankbell
Pardon my ignorance, what is a 'wheel group'
We had a power blackout here so will try a bit later to check user privileges and report back to suggestions received so far.

Thanks so much to all rrplies

The "wheel group" is a special user group that has root permissions, and it's a bad idea to add normal user accounts to it. Because everything run under that user account will have root permissions.

Why not just check the permissions on /usr/bin/wodim and other relevant files ?

It's clearly a permission problem and very likely on the file mentioned above (and/or other relevant files).

Did you look at the link I gave you before ?

I tried to burn the image today and ran into the same problem that OP did. K3B displayed the same message, but the error message also included that I could use k3bsetup to fix this.

As root, I ran k3bsetup and it opened small GUI from which I was able to give cdrecord and cdrdao permission to access the optical drive.

I did have to run

Code:
# export $(dbus-launch)
in order to run k3bsetup from the command line.

This was on Slackware.

Thanks for the info, jsbjsb001. Your post sent me looking for a man page providing a primer on groups (as opposed to a howto), but I was unsuccessful. However, a web search turned up some interesting articles:

https://administratosphere.wordpress...e-wheel-group/

https://documentation.cpanel.net/dis...el+Group+Users

By the by, I tried the wheel group trick on my Slackware system and it did not fix the K3B problem, whereas k3bsetup did fix it.
