Can't boot with Linux ISO's
 

I have a Windoze box with Windoze 2000 on a HD. It was running checkpoint firewall, however I want a more cost effective solution. I was referred to Smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org).
Wthe website had advised me to download the ISO and burn it to disk and boot from CD-ROM. I have tried that and it is not booting from CD-ROM.

I know my BIOS settings are correct because I have set them, also it appears to be trying to read the CD, however doesn't boot from it.

Is there anything I need to do with the ISO Image? please keep in mind this is a M$ Windows box, I want to boot from CD and install this package over the Windoze installation and run smoothwall. Thanks for any help.

That same thing happens with my older machine when I try to boot from cd. Some bioses are kinda funny about booting from cd -- even though they say they will.

Boot into windoze as usual. Make yourself a Linux boot floppy using Rawritewin and the appropriate floppy disk image (usually on your distro's install CD), boot off that, and then load from cd.

Of course, you have to go back in and set up the bios for boot from floppy rather than cd... or it will just keep hanging on the cd.

The distro doens't include rewritewin, is there a place to download it?

I have a problem too, i burned the 3 images of mandrake 9.1...it boots and everything when the 2 options come of installing or press f1 for other options and i press enter it just restarts again?? What do i do, iv been trying to install this crap this whole past week. I have win 2000 and i thinking of installing on the same hd with partition, give it 10 gigs on a 40.

I had the same kind of thing happen when I tried to boot Slackware 9 from cd. Every other distro would boot but slack 9 for some reason.
I ended up makeing some boot disks and all was well after that.
Look into the documentation (if any). Might find something there that will help.
If that is the case, get a copy of rawrite or rawwritewin to create the boot disks.

You could try to flash your BIOS with the newest version; if there is a problem chances are your manufacturer has a fix for it. Otherwise, a boot disk is the way to go.
