Can't boot into Mandrake 8.1

I'm installing Mandrake 8.1 on a Gateway AMD 600 (slot A). Installation goes fine, but when I reboot it hangs up at the splash screen ("Welcome" in a thousand tongues). I've used two different hard drives -- the original 20 GB Quantum Fireball, and a brand-new WD 120 GB drive.

What's wrong? Knoppix boots just fine from CD.

How much ram do you have?

I had a similar problem once; I boosted my ram from 128 to 512, and the problem never occured again.

Now, I'm not saying that this was what solved my problem, but... well I thought I'd just mention it
