Question burning DVDs with Knoppix???

I am new to Linux, actually I have only used Knoppix once to see what it was like. And I would like to start learning about Linux some.

Can I burn DVD's using Knoppix? If so what additional software do I need? And what is the recommended Hardware requirements?

I also have Red-Hat, should I just dedicate a PC to Red-Hat instead of using Knoppix? By the way, I would have to buy or build a PC for this.

Thank You for your help.

Hi and welcome to

If you are running Knoppix from the CD/DVD-Rom, and that's the only device available in that machine, then no, you can't burn DVD's. Just think: If everything runs on the fly directly from the CD, how will you remove the CD, insert a blank disk and run another application to burn?. Where would the application to burn the CD be loaded from? Short answer: it's not possible.

Now, if you've installed Knoppix on the HD, then there should not be any problem. Gnome-Toaster, K3B, GnomeBaker and many other applications can burn DVD's. There's also a version of Nero for Linux.

I would not recommend Redhat. It's so old and unsupported that it's not even fun . Go for something newer, such as Fedora (if you like Redhat) or Ubuntu (it's based on Debian, just like Knoppix is).

Good luck!

This will only be of use if KNOPPIX can recognise the DVD burner attached. I assume you are using K3B?

If so you'll have to root shell in KNOPPIX > Root Shell and type passwd/ Change password to your password and then run System > K3B Setup 2 to see if your drive has been detected.

If not then do another check in Utilities > Tools USB (USB View) to see mwhat's been detected there.

If it's not a USB drive thenI can help you, sorry.
