bullets not showing with xpdf but they show in acroread [SOLVED]

Hi all,

I have been trying to figure this out for months now, but no luck.
I made this presentation in latex using prosper; everything shows correctly in acroread, but when I use xpdf the bullets become "s" and "q"; gv shows the ps file correclty too. Once upon a time I used kpdf and it worked on that too. I think it may be a poppler issue, but I am not sure if the problem is there and whether there is a solution. I would expect so, since it worked for acroread and kpdf.

I attached a pdf file with the problem in question. Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Efo

I see the same thing using Okular vs Acroread. In Acroread the AdobiPiStd font is used to display the ZapfDinbats characters.

Generating a sample itemized list and using pdflatex, the bullets looked normal and the a subset of the fonts were embedded.

The two embedded subsets were from CMR10 and CMSY10.

Hi jschiwal,

Thanks for the reply.
I think Okular depends on poppler as xpdf does. If I itemize with a the article document class it works with xpdf; the problem occurs when I use prosper.
I can post the tex file if you are interested.

I used the "latex" command to generate the "prosper-tour.dvi" file and then used "dvipdf" to convert it to a pdf file.

The tour file used square bullets which displayed fine. Even the wipe effects worked.
Sure, you could supply the source, and I can see what happens after I create the pdf.

There are probably two solutions. Install the needed font where kpdf finds it or process the pdf so the ZapfDing font characters used are embedded in the pdf.

Thanks jschiwal,

I attached the file.
I usually use latex -> dvips -> ps2pdf, sometimes pdflatex.

Looking around, I've found others that have the same problem using a math program, and notes about it on the GhostScript site. The ZapfDingbats font is commercial and ghostscript doesn't include it. (They sent a reduced font set to ghostscript, from what I read, but I couldn't find it).

It seems to be the HA-prosper package that it causing ZapfDingbats to be used. It uses two characters from
pifont

Code:
U+25A0 \ding{"6E} # [■]
U+25C6 \ding{"75} # [◆]
The bbding font is used. Perhaps you could convert it with "tfmtodit" or install a real ZapfDinbats font in ghostscript.
Or use acroread if you are the presenter.

This ctan guide may be useful. I'm afraid you are much better with LaTeX than I am, and fonts aren't my strong suit either.

CTAN: macros/latex/doc/fntguide.pdf

Thanks for the update jschiwal,

I will see if I can get around it following your suggestions.

One of the problem with Latex is having embedded movies in the presentation. One way around is to create a link in the pdf file that runs a script that opens an application (e.g. mplayer) on top of the presentation. The problem with acroread is that it gives security warning every time I click on the link to the script; it seems I cant get rid off this; thus, xpdf or okular.

If only you will be giving the presentation, I think that installing the missing ZapfDinbats in Ghostscript might solve the problem.

Just an educated guess however.

I had the fonts installed, I think it was just a question related to fontconfig and having the Symbol and Dingbats appended.

Here is the link to what I did:
