Bullet problems with OpenOffice.Org-Ximian Edition 1.1.46

I'm using OpenOffice.Org-Ximian Edition 1.1.46, compiled from source using gentoo portage. I'm currently having problems with bullets - they don't show up at all. Graphic bullets work, numbered lists, work, and bullets seem to work except they don't output the bullet (they just indent). Anyone have/had this problem or know how I'd go about fixing it?

Actually, although this has bene a problem for several days now, I've figured out how to fix it ... I just have to right-click, go to numbering and bullets, go to 1-10, and select a different font.

However, this change goes away with new documents. How can I make these changes stick in my template (what I'm guessing would be the OOo equivalent of word's
