Building from source, debian rules style, shell drops down to subshell

I'm trying to build a source package on Debian. Here's the output
Code:
tom@debian:~/Downloads/x48$ debian/rules build
dh_testdir
autoreconf
src/Makefile.am:64: warning: 'INCLUDES' is the old name for 'AM_CPPFLAGS' (or '*_CPPFLAGS')
./configure --prefix=/usr
$
You'll notice that my custom prompt is replaced by just the '$'. The shell still works as normal. But I can't exit or quit. I don't quite know what to do.

Here's the process that's still running
Code:
tom 27358 0.0 0.0 8232 2172 pts/2 S 12:26 0:00 /usr/bin/make -f debian/rules build
Does anyone know what's up with that? Why it doesn't exit after the error.

I figured it out. There were a few characters to the left of the shebang in the configure script.
