building a kernel

This is going to sound stupid but, a person that I work with compiles the kernel # make all dep clean modules.... basically along those lines. When I compile I use # make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make install. Other then the difference of using && so that it wont continue if one part fails is there any other difference?

It depends on what kernel you are configuring. If you're building the 2.6. kernel you don't use the make dep or make install. All you need to do is...make mrproper then build your kernel. After that make bzImage-->make modules-->make modules_install.. make your links and configure grub or lilo, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Here's a good guide from Drozz...http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rnel+compiling

It started out with the 2.4 kernels. Both ways get the job done though I was just wondering if there was a difference. I also have compiled 2.6 kernels using make install works the same as before, less files to copy and link.
