Build gnome using garnome for one computer on another

Hello,

I have a computer running (32-bit) FC5, on which I would like to update Gnome. I'm hesitant to upgrade to a newer version since in this case it would require a clean install, and thus require recompiling a significant amount of apps from source that I have installed over the past year or so.

So, I am wondering if it would be feasible to build Gnome using garnome, but on another computer, a much faster dual core running (32-bit) Ubuntu? (The dual core machine also runs Fedora 7 x86_64 but building it there would require a cross-compile.)

So following the garnome instructions can I create a dedicated user account in Ubuntu, build gnome, and then transferring this account (ie the /home/user directory and all its contents) to the FC5 machine? From what I gather, garnome downloads and builds the dependencies from source so maybe the package differences between Ubuntu and Fedora wouldn't be that important(?)

Thanks

Why would upgrading GNOME require a clean install? Why not just use garnome to build your new GNOME into /home/usr on the FC5 box?

Actually I meant to say upgrading to a newer version of Fedora would require the clean install. And as for building gnome on the FC5 box, that would probably take ages. As I'm finding out Ubuntu isn't that well-suited for building large packages like gnome, so I'll probably end up giving up on this and sticking with what I've got.
