Unhappy broken upgrade

I am using suse 9.1 and tried the online update in Yast. It gave me a list of about 100 upgrades that were suggested. I installed several that sounded good, such as a patch for java, Yast, and the Nvidia 3D drivers. It seems that wasn't a good idea. Now Yast won't start up, java applets no longer work, and I can't switch users to a new graphics window.

Does anyone know how to either back out the "upgrades" or reconnect everything so that it works correctly again?

You could try to fix things using YaST from the command line (see the SuSE System Admin Guide), or su to root and run /sbin/SuSEconfig. Watch for error messages. If you don't see any, reboot to see if that fixed things.

man SuSEconfig for the little info it has.

Well, SuSEconfig only gave me this message of any significance to me

ATTENTION: You have modified /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc. Leaving it untouched...
You can find my version in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc.SuSEconfig...

Let me explain better what yast does when attempting to start:
Directly from taskbar...
1) processes and loads for a few seconds then asks for root's password.
2) I enter root's password
3) processes for another couple seconds
4) nothing.

Indirectly from KDE control center...
1) I go to "yast2 modules"
2) I select some section that requires admin privs
3) Select the administrator mode button and it prompts for root password
4) I enter root's password
5) Window loads for a couple seconds
6) Finishes with a blank window
