Broken Gnome shell, can't get it to re-install

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and have had gnome shell happily working for ages. Last week I saw http://www.webupd8.org/2012/06/skype...lable-for.html and thought I'd give it a try. Not a good move, got a failure message pop up during install and then gnome shell fell over and would not re-load. I tried re-starting from CLI and got more errors thatn I could keep up with so I thought I'd re-install the shell. No joy, then I tried purging the various gnome ppa's I had enabled so I could try re-installing in a clean manner (Gnome team, gnome 3 ppa, gnome shell testing ppa, webupd8 gnome 3 ppa) So after an afternoon of purging I did:-
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-theme-standard gnome-tweak-tool gnome-contacts gnome-sushi dconf-tools
and then I get:-
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
dconf-tools is already the newest version.
gnome-contacts is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
gnome-shell : Depends: gir1.2-clutter-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-coglpango-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-mutter-3.0 (>= 3.4.1) but it is not going to be installed
               Depends: libgjs0-
Depends: gir1.2-gjsdbus-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gjs (>= 1.30) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gnome-session-fallback but it is not going to be installed
 gnome-sushi : Depends: libgjs0-
Depends: gir1.2-clutter-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-coglpango-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-clutter-gst-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gir1.2-gtkclutter-1.0 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
What do I do next??? I really want gnome-shell back, I can't get on with Unity, KDE sucks and I don't really see any other options that do it for me.

Hi,

at first glance it seems you forgot to do an "apt-get update".

Hi,

ok, the next thing that sticks out is the word *held* in:
Quote:
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
If you have put some packages on hold that would explain why the upgrade can not proceed.
What is the output of the following?
Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep -w hold
Evo2.
