Forgetting bad past experience (in debian i386 and amd64), I have newly lost a new DVD in trying to create a data disk with brasero with debian i386. After successful simulation at the lowest speed, burning failed and I expect that the disk is no more good (this occurred in the past). In the past I complained with debian, getting no answer.
In contrast, I tried k3b with full success. However, as a gnome user, installation of k3b brought in so much of kde that proper use of gnome was prevented. Can anyone tell of an installation of k3b that does not hinder gnome? In particular not the startx procedure (as I normally work without calling the x server).
AFAIK, k3b cannot be built without all the kde deps. Though they shouldn't interfere with GNOME, it's perfectly possible to have KDE and GNOME installed side by side. What problems are you having there?
You could also consider some alternatives. None as full featured as k3b, but they might suit your needs.

Well, if you normally use Gnome, you would normally be using Gnome on top of X, even if you don't type startx yourself, so this part is a bit unclear to me

That should not be true, but I don't know exactly what you did. You could:
Just install k3b and that would drag in many kde libraries, but that should work in Gnome and should only use those libraries when you try to execute k3b. Doing it this way could easily be a problem if you don't have much ram, as you would have to have both the kde and gnome libraries in use at once, and that may be on the heavy side for a low-resource machine. Other than that, it should 'just work' though (even if it isn't exactly elegant)
You could install kde alongside gnome and just choose which to use (at login time) depending on whether you want to burn disks, or not. This may not fit with your workflow, but doesn't have the disadvantage of loading both sets of libraries at once, if that is a problem to you.
And, if the problems persists, you should say something about which version of k3b you are using: A late 3.x would be good, a late 4.x (say, from kde 4.5.something) would be good, but an early 4.x (say, before 4.2) would probably be a really be quite a buggy thing, and so well worth avoiding, if there are still burn issues.
Thanks. gnomebaker (already present in debian i386 squeeze) burned perfectly my DVD (luckily still good after failure with brasero).
Installation of k3b on debian i386 squeeze/gnome was months ago, therefore I only remember that startx did no more work. I restored it and gnome-session started gnome but badly functioning. Sorry, unhelpful account. At any event, on this vintage desktop already gnome takes much of the space available while in the cluster there is no x server.
Thanks again for gnomebaker
