bought linux disks but can't install

i bought ubuntu,zenwalk 4.4.1 and pclinuxos at ondisk .i have tried all three and can't get any to work.i bought an old hp vectra just to try some linux to see what i like.the hard drive was small so i got anouther one but still can't new one has vista which i hate but want to try linux on the old one before i switch.i will be switching somehow as soon as i can figure this out.
