Botched Netscape install!?
I'm trying to install AOL instant mesenger but it says I need to install netscape. So I try to install netscape. Well after a few hours of trying and retrying, I finally start to make some head way and then I hit a brick wall.
Could someone tell me what this is and how might I go about fixing it: linux:/home/omega/Documents # tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz netscape-installer/ netscape-installer/netscape-installer netscape-installer/netscape-installer-bin netscape-installer/installer.ini netscape-installer/README netscape-installer/config.ini netscape-installer/license.txt linux:/home/omega/Documents # cd netscape-installer linux:/home/omega/Documents/netscape-installer # ./netscape-installer Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 linux:/home/omega/Documents/netscape-installer # Thanks |
I'm going to guess that you logged in as a non-root user then su'd before attempting the install. The install script wants to pop up a nice GUI window for you. Try "xhost + localhost" before you su to root.

Or if you just want an alternative to installing AOL, (if you don't want netscape of course) just use gaim, it should come with your distrobution, it supports different protcols like msn, icq, aol, yahoo etc.

Thanks for the help.
I got netscape to install properly the xhost + localhost thing worked great. I couldn't find the gaim thing on my system for some reason. I'll try to find it later. Any ways this version of netscape sucks. That side bar is the most anoying thing they ever invented. It's too much like using aol for my taste. |
