booting to the command prompt
Does anyone know how I can get out of the X server. I am trying to install the nvidia drivers, but it tells me I am in the graphical user interface. I need to get to just the command prompt outside of X server. I know how to get into it (start x), but how do I get out? LOL
Thanks guys. I'm using Fedora(latest version) |
as root:
telinit 3 edit /etc/inittab to change default runlevel |
more:
if you got into X from the console (by using 'startx'... ) -- and not from gdm/kdm/xdm -- just use logout. it'll throw you back to the console you came from |
thnx for fast response
Thanks for answering my ?, however, when i type that in:
[chris@localhost ~]$ su Password: [root@localhost chris]# telinit 3 bash: telinit: command not found [root@localhost chris]# ./telinit 3 bash: ./telinit: No such file or directory [root@localhost chris]# That is what I get. Also, what do I change in my inittab file? here is it's contents: # # inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up # the system in a certain run-level. # # Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <miquels@drinkel.nl.mugnet.org> # Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes # # Default runlevel. Thanks though man! |
Change this line:
id:5:initdefault: to this: id:3:initdefault: However, this requires a restart. telinit 3 should work. Do you see telinit in /sbin path? -twantrd |

How did thi9s solution get so complicated???
your in KDE of Fedora?? 1 press CTRL+ALT+F1 2 root the enter your pass word 3 root@localhost# type 'init 3 ' 4. Install the NVIDIA Drivers sh ./NVIDiA-6111-x86.run (tab to autocomplete the name) 5. type ' vi /etc/X11/XF86config-4 6. once that has loaded a page of text find driver = 'nv' press i once to edit the file and change 'nv' to 'nvidia' 7 save the file "press ESC once" type ZZ (two capital Z's ) 8. bytes writen to XF86config-4 9. to be safe that it worked type reboot now 10. KDE Gnpome has loaded open Konsole (a terminal) and type 'glxgears' if the drivers are working you should see gears dah lol (you now have openGL support) |
i got the drivers to install perfectly, but while the setup is installing, I get a message that says I have rivafb installed, and there is a known issue with having it and nvidia software. i didnt think much of it. I edited my X.org file replacing "nv" with "nvidia". Then, i rebooted. Upon restart, I typed in startx, and got a "NO DISPLAYS AVAILABLE". And I was back at the command prompt. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
