booting Linux from harddrive

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS but have to use cd for it to boot from it. I followed all instructions. I have a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5102HM. After pressing F10 to get into boot menu it asks me for a password so I cant tell it to boot from hard drive. Any way around this.

I'd guess that one of a few issues.

What happens when you boot to hd? I assume bios is set correctly.

General tips below.

A normal install usually asks about boot loader, in this case grub.
A bios should look at the first part of the boot order devices and see if it can boot. If there is some unique deal with grub and it can't support the device hand off from bios then it could fail.

If grub boots then we'd have to know if /boot can be found.

So you can boot the installed system from the option on the boot menu of the Live CD of Ubuntu, is that correct?

There should not be any reason to press the F10 key if you installed correctly as the bootloader for Ubuntu would have installed to the master boot record pointing to its partition and the boot files. This should boot automatically since Ubuntu is the only operating system you have, at least the only one you mention in your post. Would this be a UEFI system?
