Booting inux from a debugger

Hello,

I am running debian (lenny) on my laptop & kernel version is 2.6.31. Is there a way I can boot linux from a kernel debugger prompt? I believe KGDB requires a host & target.

My intention is to set breakpoints in the linux boot code & step through as it boots up. Is it possible to do this with just a single laptop? or I necessarily need another PC / host for debugging?

Please advice.

When you talk about booting, are you talking about the kernel loading or the OS loading? If you talk about the OS, it have nothing to do with kgdb, just add echo/read in init scripts.
