Question Booting from a USB key (flash disk) without using Ramdisk

I was wondering if it is possible to boot linux from a USB key while using the USB key itself as the root linux partition (no RAMdisk) so that changes made to the operating system (such as installing software, editing config files) can be permanently stored.

In order to boot from a USBDisk, you will always need a RamDisk.

I realise this is quite a late reply, but may I suggest using a ramdisk, and creating a script to sync the ramdisk and the usb when you shutdown? I havent tried it before but I think that may work.
