bootin into a terminal


Well I am using fedora core 4 . with only the Gome desktop installed ... and its default terminal...

What i wanna know is how can i boot directly into a console without starting X server? because when i try to start without X server by trying to disable xfs or mdmonitor at interactive start up i dont really get anyhwere.. any ideas as to what i need to install or what i need to do to start up in a terminal directly? pls

Try to pass
init 3
as a parameter to the kernel on the boot loaders prompt.
