Boot with GRUB

I have a configuration which is :
. First IDE controller : a disk as master and a CR-ROM a slave
. Second IDE controller : an IDE flashdisk as master.

I have the directory /boot on the flashdisk and directory / on the first IDE disk.
I install Grub in the MBR of the flashdisk (in fact i think), but i can not boot on it.

Do you know a solution or is it impossible to boot with grub on a disk which is not the first.
