boot sector and lilo collapse !!!!! URGENT URGENT URGEN !!!!!

Today I've turned on my box and it would not boot. I've forgot to rerun lilo yesterday and now I have a problem. I have SATA hdd and a boot disk (from installation). If I insert boot disk into floppy and boot, the kernel panic shows up because the driver for SATA hdd is not present; however I have a perfectly working driver for SATA hdd on other disk. How do I tell lilo when searching for kernel image it tells me that I insert driver disk??

!!!!! URGENT URGENT URGENT !!!!!  :study: :Pengy:   :(

hm...what if you did a new bootdisk, but made it so that it has the driver in it? wouldn't that be the simplest way... (or actually, I dont' know about the simplicity..but) the problem of course is that you need a working linux to do this..

EDIT: sorry I can't help with lilo. it's just that I haven't used lilo for a long time now, not after I installed grub..

Does booting from the Debian install CD in rescue mode work?

RagingIfrit 07-03-2004 10:04 PM

I don't think so, but of course I'm using Fedora 1. I thought that the rescue disc would only set him back to the defaults in lilo, which should be the same as he has on the floppy. My question is, can you edit your lilo file (when its booting) or the disc? In my rescue disc it has an option(press 'e' or something) to edit settings, which is the same as grub. Now I don't know what you should change because I don't use lilo, and I dont know zip about SATA hdd, but maybe someone else can tell you what to enter.

this is major problem 2dam...., since i do not have an debian install cd, otherwise i would already solved the problem. I need to make a linux boot disk with ft3xx.o (driver fot my SATA) included, but i do nto know how to make it under windows!!!

frelihm 07-03-2004 11:16 PM

and i do not have the slitghest clues WHY IT COLLAPSED since I had not touch neither lilo nor kernel (i've just looked configuration via makemenuconfig)

frelihm 07-03-2004 11:57 PM

does anyone has rescue disk with ft3xx.o driver included?

2damncommon 07-04-2004 12:15 AM

Don't know if this will help.
When I boot up my bf24rescue floppy ("rescue root=/dev/fd0"), inserting the root floppy when requested, one of the options presented in the menu (after language selection) is "Preload modules from a floppy disk".
This message (in part) appears: "All the modules you want to load with this process must reside in the boot subdirectory of your floppy disk."
Another option is "Execute a shell".
Perhaps it would be possible to load the driver, start a shell, mount the drive and run lilo?
Not sure it will help, all I can think of.
Debian floppy images

frelihm 07-06-2004 05:51 AM

how do i execute a shell immediatly after boot?

frelihm 07-07-2004 01:59 AM

whith which program i burn the images from your link to floppy? Can I burn it onto cd?

2damncommon 07-07-2004 07:13 AM

From Windows use the rawrite program. It's on most distros install CDs or can be downloaded from the internet.
Most CD programs allow burning a boot image of a floppy. Since there is a second image this may or may not work. ("rescue root=/dev/hdc" ??)

frelihm 07-07-2004 08:51 AM

i did not have time, but now i will try, thank you anyway a lot.

frelihm 07-07-2004 09:37 AM

now i've installed os 2000 loader boot loader software. It found Linux partition and its boot sector, but it seems that I've overwritten the linux boot sector with windows boot sector. Is it possible to rewrite linux boot sector from windows?

frelihm 07-08-2004 02:43 AM

can I help myself with cygwin?

b0uncer 07-08-2004 03:29 AM

I don't think windows is of any help if you need to "rewrite" your linux boot sector...the chances are you could do it by booting from a floppy, if you could start a shell.

frelihm 07-08-2004 04:38 AM

but i've tried at least 15 boot floppies, neither works. I need a boot floppy disk which will ask me for additional driver befeore boot becuase on separate disk i have driver for sata controller and hdd

frelihm 07-12-2004 08:18 AM

so, what is the parameter at boot prompt for aditional driver loading?

frelihm 07-12-2004 08:19 AM

or yet better, how do I start shell directly from boot prompt?

RagingIfrit 07-12-2004 10:30 AM

Heres what I would do, get your boot disk and load it. Then (I'm not sure if this will work with debian) choose Upgrade Your Current Installation and just follow through. This may be only Fedora Core 2, but if it works in Debian, then it should preserve your information and reinstall/fix your bootloader at the same time. Good luck!

frelihm 07-12-2004 02:57 PM

i do not have any options availabe, just lilo main screen, and when i load the boot disk it says: kernel panic, cannot mount root on 08:01 (/dev/sda1), since there is no driver in memory to handle SATA hdd

frelihm 07-13-2004 03:37 PM

I'VE DONE IT :) with bootable cd (debian) :) problem solved
