While booting my OpenSuse 10 installation after initial install (CD1 only), i get the following error:

System Boot Control: The system has been
System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local
INIT: PANIC: segmentation violation at 0xffffe420! sleeping for 30 seconds.

My hardware configuration is as follows:

ASRock 9i5 (Intel 845G based)

Please help me regarding this matter keeping in mind that I am a Linux newbie.

Put CD1 in the drive and boot. If you don't see options to a)boot from hard drive, b) boot from cd, or c) repair or rescue, then select the option to install.

It should then detect an existing installation, and ask you which you want to do: a, b, c, or install.

Choose the repair option, to see if it can repair itself. When that's done, remove the cd, and try to reboot.

Actually, this or something similar happens with every linux distro I install, and I've tried at least 7-8 including fedora, mandrake, elx, xandros, etc...
