boot knoppix from floppy without hard drive

Hi guys.I have a laptop with bad motherboard.Motherboard connector cannot recognize the hard drive. To replace mother board it will cost about 400$.Is possible to boot Knoppix dvd or cd from the floppy and then use USB flush drive to load image? Also use the same usb flush drive as persistent directory. Please help.

simple things first.

1) when did hard drive fail? does your bios have a smart option to say whats wrong with it?
did you play with it? if so is it possible that jumpers are wrong or a cable loose?

2) slack put a floppy image that enables cd rom but it is not clear to me if you are using laptop at the moment or have access to a chatroom computer or a friends to proceed with that.....so can you download....are you using a diff computer or have you got usb drive or stick working?

sbootmgr.dsk is name of d/load
http://www.slackware.com/install/rootdisk.php

you do not need any others...I have test this....it enables cdroms

Hi AUS9.Thank you for reply. The computer which I'm talking about is Dell Insperon and some thing went wrong.Computer didn't auto indicate hard drive any more.I tried to put new hard drive and it didn't work for me.I called DELL and they tell they need to replased motherboard.
But it cost 400$.So I'm planing to start Knoppix from floppy and then load image of CD or DVD from USB Drive(I have 16gb usb drive )which I can use as hard drive.Do you know any procedure to do it?DVD drive is also working but I want to run from USB because it faster.

so there is no working bios option to allow usb boot from your stuffed motherboard?

2) "is it possible to boot Knoppix dvd or cd from the floppy" does this mean your cd drive is also not working

3) still pretending you need a (working) floppy drive...that above floppy will enable a normal cd drive...I do not have an external one so others may need to reply.

well I do not understand the problem....cd internal works so change bios boot order to cd

2) boot knoppix with usb drive plugged in

3) I do not have a usb drive but icons should appear on the desktop....if not, read the /var/log/dmesg to see what the usb is called....normally it will be
/dev/sda1 ...sda2 etc

so manually

su
mkdir /usb
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /usb

assuming you want partition 1 readable thru usb ....its quicker than using /mnt/device which knoppix normally uses

4) now hidden away in knoppix is the command to install to a device.....but you have not said if bios allows boot order to usb ? please do so

the command is
knoppix-installer

5) but there may be easier usb install live cds.....puppy and DSL? they have a menu item I think
