Question boot essentials for new kernel

I am trying to compile the 2.4.25 kernel but I am having trouble getting it to boot. It is unable to load the partition table amount other errors.

Here is my config:
Pentium 2
Red Hat 9
IDE hard drive

Here are a couple of kernel questions:
1.) What are the minimum drivers that need to be compiled into the kernel in order to boot?

2.) What are the commands I need to issue before rebuilding after making a tweak?

3.) What is the easiest way to save my configuration file from the last build so I can make a quick tweak without having to go through all the settings?

I have read through several threads on this forum but the answers to my questions aren't very clear.

Thanks for any tips.
