Im installin Redhat linux 9 and Im at the point of creatin a boot diskette and every floppy I put in it it says a message about it not bein able to right on it is it important??? or can I just skip this step?

No, this step is not important and you can create a boot floppy from inside GNU/Linux also. This is just like the boot floppy in Win$

I get the same error message during the install of Red Hat 9, so I skipped this particular step. I'm able to load Red Hat with the Gnome desktop.

What would be the procedure to create a boot/rescue diskette for Red Hat 9 within Gnome?

I could not find a place in gnome to make a bootdisk(it might be there) it is real easy from the terminal. to get to the terminal goto
system tools>terminal
then type these commands
$su
it will ask you to enter your root password
#/sbin/mkbootdisk (enter kernel version without perentheses)

I am trying to install RH 9 on an old computer that cannot boot from the CDROM. When trying to copy the boot disk image file from the first CD to a 3.5 formatted diskette, I find that it is 1.4Mb and all the diskettes that I try can only take 1.38Mb, so the image file is too large to copy over. Any words of wisdom?

ya it is to big. but do you have a newer computer that you can borrow itz cd drive? if it works you need a new cd drive but if it still doesnt it is somethin else

jim ,, now ur using windows on ur machine .. if ur using windows now on ur machine form windows also you can create boot disk the porcess indetail

insert redhat9.0 disk#1 into the cdrom

in that u find <pathofcdrom>:\dosutils directory

go to the command prompt assume now ur cd rom dirve is F:
type the following command

f:\dosutils\rawrite

(it will ask you for the source if the boot image like the follwoing message)

enter the path of the boot image locate .........

now you enter

f:\images\bootdisk.img

now it will ask you for the empty formatted disk insert the disk it will automatically creates boot disk

directly copying bootdisk.img into floppy that floppy will not helpful to boot u
