Bluetooth doesn't work for sh... crap

Hey,

I'm having a problem with bluetooth. It just doesn't seem to work. I've got every imaginable, relevant bluetooth package installed, bluetooth adapter and usb 2.0 ports. Yet, no dice.

At first, I was able to plug it in and the bluetooth logo would come on. Then, I would go to scan for my wiimote (closest thing to me), it would scan and then utlimately time out. The wiimote was in discoverable mode. I tried issuing the command 'lsusb' just to make sure it was there... but it seems like it would freeze. It wouldn't output anything to the terminal.

I tried rebooting with the BT adapter plugged in, udev would come up and just sit there. Seemingly doing nothing. I unplug it and it would resume booting. Upon coming back into X, I plug in the adapter and now it doesn't recognize it. I tried a second reboot, without the adapter plugged in and got back into X, plugged it in and still nothing.

I've had similar problems like this one across multiple OS's, and two computers. Also, two bluetooth adapters. I'm beginning to just give up on this. I hadn't touched it in a while and thought it might work with Fedora 8, but no. I've searched for answers across many message boards, but nothing. I'm hoping someone has had this problem and can help.

Thanks in advance,

Brandon

When you plug in the dongle wait 15 seconds and run the ' dmesg ' command and see if it sees it or complains about something. Have used two different dongles and both worked fine. Only thing bluetooth I have is a printer and can print to it over bluetooth.

I've got a couple of lines you could try to see if your bluetooth works.

As root make sure your bluetooth service is running. Type: service bluetooth start.

Then as root or a normal user type: sdptool browse. You should see this message Inquiring ... followed by info about any devices detected.

Make a note of the mac address for the device you wish to connect to and type:

rfcomm connect 0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx <--mac address.

Hopefully you should be asked for a password to the device and one for the computer.

The line 'pegasus 3-3:1.2: get_registers, status -19' goes on for over 1000 lines in the terminal. I decided to save space and only paste a couple. I'm positive this has something to do with the bluetooth adapter. This line here is peculiar 'pegasus 3-3:1.2: eth1, Belkin F5D5050 USB Ethernet, 40:73:5c:32:00:81' as my adapter is Belkin, but I don't think that's the MAC address. On the back of the adapter is what I believe to be the MAC address: 00:0A:3A:7B:C1:29, but then at the end of that is a '-7D'. Not sure what that is, but it's separated from the aforementioned MAC address.

Nexus, I made sure bluetooth was started. However, the command is '/sbin/service bluetooth start'. It was successful, but when I issue the command 'sdptool browse', the inquiry starts, but quickly fails.

I appreciate the help. Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks,

Brandon

EDIT: One peculiar thing I noticed, when the bluetooth logo pops up in my panel and I go to Preferences, everything is greyed out. Where when I first connected it, I was able to change things. Not anymore, though.

If I am looking at it correctly it is connecting to a 1.0-1.1 version USB port because I am see the ohci-hcd module name. Do you have any 2.0 USB ports and try it there? They use the ehci-hcd module. Some 1.0-1.1 USB controllers a quirky with the linux modules.

Hey,

this is going to be a lengthy post... because of dmesg. I have to do it in two parts. Brian, I plugged in the bluetooth adapter to one of the USB ports on board. Not one of the hubs that's on the front of my computer connected some wires. Now, dmesg seems to make more sense and even makes mention of a bluetooth adapter. However, it's still not working. I'm hoping you guys can take another look at dmesg and tell me if something is wrong or I'm missing something. Thanks again.

It appears as though it's connected, but using the 1.1 USB driver... I think? The port on the front of my computer CLEARLY states a USB 2.0 port, and I imagine the ones on the back are the same. Maybe a USB config file needs altering? Please let me know.

Thanks,

I just thought this was pertinent... sdptool browse doesn't immediately fail. It browses for about 15 seconds and then the inquiry fails.

Thinking it might be the device I'm attempting to scan, my Wiimote, I attempted to scan for my phone. It's a Motorola Q, but it's not picking that up either.

Regards,

Brandon

Could your SELinux policy be blocking bluetooth communications?

Nexus, thanks for the suggestion. I'm not too familiar with SELinux and how to configure it. I temporarily disabled it and attempted a scan, but it yielded the same results.

Thanks,

Brandon

Here is my hcid.conf file. If the pound sign is in front of everything... doesn't that mean it's commented out? Meaning it won't work?

#
# HCI daemon configuration file.
#

# HCId options
options {
Automatically initialize new devices
autoinit yes;

# Security Manager mode
# none - Security manager disabled
# auto - Use local PIN for incoming connections
# user - Always ask user for a PIN
#
security user;

# Pairing mode
# none - Pairing disabled
# multi - Allow pairing with already paired devices
# once - Pair once and deny successive attempts
pairing multi;

# Default PIN code for incoming connections
passkey "BlueZ";
}

# Default settings for HCI devices
device {
# Local device name
# %d - device id
# %h - host name
name "%h-%d";

# Local device class
class 0x000100;

# Default packet type
#pkt_type DH1,DM1,HV1;

# Inquiry and Page scan
iscan enable; pscan enable;

# Default link mode
# none - no specific policy
# accept - always accept incoming connections
# master - become master on incoming connections,
# deny role switch on outgoing connections
lm accept;

# Default link policy
# none - no specific policy
# rswitch - allow role switch
# hold - allow hold mode
# sniff - allow sniff mode
# park - allow park mode
lp rswitch,hold,sniff,park;
}

Thanks for the help,

Brandon

Your options are commented out.

security user;
From the list of available options, this is the current active setting.

I've compared your hcid.conf with mine and the only difference is this line is not commented out in yours.

# Automatically initialize new devices

Just a thought... could it be possible that the firmware needs flashing to a better suited one? Everything else seems to be OK... bluetooth service starts, device is recognized and given a MAC address. However, none of the commands work. Thanks for your input.

Before flashing anything I'd be tempted to try a live distro, something like Knoppix which has a proven track record supporting devices out of the box and see if your adaptors still don't work. Just a thought
