blocking ports


how do i block ports using the iptables?

Well you should really be more specific in what you want to port but you should also really learn IPTABLES. I'd suggest starting off by reading the sticky thread in Linux - Security that unSpawn has posted called Security References, etc. Has some good links to iptables tutorials, etc.

After a brief play under Mandrake and Gentoo I found shorewall to be quite easy to setup - see www.shorewall.net - shorewall uses iptables.

To learn iptables , take a look at the documentation and tutorials on netfilter / iptables.
http://www.netfilter.org/

You distribution may (or may not) have a GUI utility to configure iptables.
If not, take a look at ipcop and fwbuilder.
