Do you mean access the file on the CD from within Linux? If that's what you mean (I apologize if it's not), then you should be able to find it in /mnt/cdrom or something like that. You could also put it on your windows partition and copy it over from there.

alright thats sounds good, but meanwhile i transfered my copy of black box in my my home directory "/home/David" but when i type in /home/directory it just says that it is a directory and thats it, when i type out the full code with unzip with it. the console says its just a directory. the unzip comand doesnt seem to do much.
am i doing somthing wrong?
btw here is what ive been typing in:
"/home/David umzip tar-zxvfblackbox-0.61.1.tar.gz"
thanks for all your help

i presume you want (well.. you do want..)
[/home/David]$ tar zxvf blackbox-0.61.1.tar.gz

Don't worry about it... I'm a newbie myself. Only been using Linux for a couple of months now.

If you want to change to a directory you have to use the cd command like in DOS (I think this is what you mean).

So, you'd type 'cd /home/David'
or you can always type 'cd ~' which will bring
you to your home directory.

Once you are there, type 'tar -zxvf blackbox-0.61.1.tar.gz' to unpack the archive. You shouldn't type unzip in there anywhere.

Cheers.

Arrow

The multiple ways to get files from a .tar.gz can be confusing if you're a newbie.
I've seen piping, unzipping then untarring, tar -xzvf.
Easy just to do tar -zxvf for .tar.gz and tar -xvf for .tar
Had me stumped.
How it would be joy if there were examples of usage in the man pages.
