Blackbox failed to connect

I have just reinstalled my system and installed blackbox. In the past I have always used blackbox and this is what I can't figure out. After configuring and making Blackbox, I installed it and created my .xinitrc file. When I tried to type startx, it seems that just the plain xserver starts up (the mouse is an "x" not an arrow) and then linux drops back to the console with an error of not being able to connect to the window manager. Gnome starts up just fine. What can I do?
