bittorrent hogging the bandwidth

I'm on a shared cable connection at the house and ran into this unpleasing issue using bittorrent.

I've noticed when I download via http or ftp, I can reach speeds up to 250 or 300kb/sec and the rest of the network isn't affected too much

Yet when I download with bittorrent, even at speeds of 5 or 10kb/sec, it really hurts the rest of the network when it comes to viewing pages or playing online games.

Is there any way I can decrease something in the settings in bittorrent? I'm thinking it has to do something with packet send and receive...but im not going to say anything more because I am a true
