Bittorent's concept of "tit-for-tat" ?

Hello.

It is said that Bittorent works on a "tit for tat" basis.

But my upload / download numbers is anything but. I have setting my firewall's public ports to the valid range 6681-6889, and am also seeding a file. My download is at 5 KB/s. My seeded (?) file is uploading at 11 KB/s and the file I'm dowloading is also uploading at 9KB/s. That's 20 KB/s uploading vs 5 KB/s downloading. It's been like this for the last 4 hours.

Also, there are 3 other seeders for a group of about 7 on both files. But we seem to be sharing only amongst non-seeders, I don't connect to the seeders at all, probably only by the other leechers.

Does the fact that I'm also seeding a complete file put me at an advantage or disadvantage for more download ? When is Bittorent's tat for the tit relevant or kicking in ?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

If depends on way more than just whether you're seeding or not. How many seeds are there for the file you're downloading and how many leechers? What is the upstream bandwidth of the seeders as opposed to the downstream bandwidth of the leechers? There is a lot of info on how BitTorrent works available on Wikipedia.

that isnt too abnormal. it sometimes takes time for people to start uploading to you. eventually you will connect with the seeders and things will pick up. It also depends on how they have their client configured. Also there may be some restrictions from you ISP. They dont like it when bittorrent downloads take up their bandwidth.
seeding means that you have a complete copy of the file and you are distributing to others. So you shouldnt have much download speed on that one, mostly upload.
